How Many CCTV Cameras Does Your Home Need?
The right number of CCTV cameras depends on your home layout, entrances, parking area and the places you want to monitor. A small flat may need a different setup from an independent house with multiple floors.
1. Start with entry and exit points
List the main door, rear door, balcony or terrace access, driveway and parking gate. These are often the first locations to assess.
2. Identify blind spots
Walk around the property and look for corners, stairways and side passages that are not visible from the planned camera positions. Avoid placing cameras where bright sunlight or lights obscure faces.
3. Choose the right camera type
- HD analogue: may suit an existing compatible DVR system.
- IP cameras: can offer flexible network-based features, depending on the model and recorder.
- Wireless cameras: still need reliable power and Wi-Fi coverage; confirm network reliability first.
- PTZ cameras: can pan and zoom, but one PTZ camera does not necessarily replace fixed cameras covering important areas.
4. Decide recording and storage needs
Camera resolution, frame rate, motion activity, compression settings and the number of recording days all affect storage. Ask for a storage estimate based on your actual requirements.
5. Get a site-based quotation
Camera count alone does not determine the final cost. Cable length, mounting height, conduit, recorder channels, storage and installation conditions also matter.
